DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN SKELMERSDALE WAS FIRST DESIGNATED AS A NEW TOWN?

WERE YOU ONE OF THE FIRST GENERATION OF IMMIGRANTS TO THE NEW TOWN?

WERE YOU INVOLVED IN THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF SKELMERSDALE NEW TOWN?

I am currently compiling  a history of the making of the new town and am looking for old newspapers, photographs or simply people's memories of what Skem was like when it first became a new town. If you can help, please email me at writeme@carolfenlon.com

Read Carol's latest short story 'Half Mile Island' in Radgepacket  Vol 4, now published by Byker Books . You can still get Radgepacket Vol 3 which includes Carol's story, 'Half Known Things' ( a coincidence of halves here?) available directly from Byker or from Amazon. If you like rough tales of the inner city, these collections are for you.

NOT ABOUT WRITING BUT ABOUT THE FUTURE OF SKELMERSDALE AND THE PROPOSED EXTENSION OF WHITEMOSS HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILL SITE

Public consultation has now closed with the Lancashire Minerals and waste Development Framework on proposals to extend the site at Whitemoss by incorporating a further large area of arable land and by granting a further time extension to the site's activities.

If this extension is granted it means the continuation of toxic waste being dumped for many years leaving us with a legacy which will last way beyond the actual life of the site..

The Whitemoss site is situated in the middle of our best arable land, amongst incresingly rare peat deposits which should be conserved. The effect on the local water table and watercourses such as the river Tawd cannot be ruled out for all time.

It currently surrounds several residential properties and the proposed extension will further encroach on homes along Whitemoss Road South. The group West Lancs Residents against Toxic hazards has been formed to explore what the proposed extension to the site means for local  residents and to bring such matters to the attention of the local authority and to  the people of Skelmersdale. For more information email  WRATH.2010@yahoo.com

If the prospect of continued toxic dumping in Skem concerns you please do something to make your voice heard and join WRATH.  It is only through joining forces that we can hope to have any effect. We can do nothing about the dumping which has already taken place but we may be able to effect damage limitation. It is not just our land it is our children's futures. Hasn't Skem been dumped on enough already?

Please pass this information on to your friends and relatives. There is a group on Facebook, SAY NO TO MORE HAZARDOUS WASTE IN SKELMERSDALE which you can join to show solidarity.
